SHOP SAFETY I

Required prior to taking ALL classes and using Open Shop hours - despite any previous experience, the Shop Safety Class gives you an overview of the Public Workshop and some of the basic stationary machines. Learn how to safely work in a community shop environment!

SHOP SAFETY II

Required for those with shop experience that would like to get certified to use the jointer, planer, and table saw during Open Shop, this class covers tool setup, adjustment, proper material processing, and best practices. Limited hands-on practice after each demo, a great refresher!  Novices please take Wood I and you will get signed off to use the same machines.

Prerequisite - Safety 1 Class Time – 2 hours  |  Cost – $75

 

WOODWORKING

WOODWORKING I & II

Woodworking I - Turn rough sawn lumber into useable boards. Learn about choosing and locally sourcing wood, and how each machine preps the wood for your projects. 

Woodworking II - Join wood using lamination, miters, dados, rabbets, pocket screws, biscuits, splines, and dowels. Learn everything from the basics to more complex jigs and joinery.

ROUTER TABLE & HAND ROUTERS

From basic joinery to decorative edges, learn about edge trimming, grooves and slots, and stop cuts for framing, molding, joining, and attractive bevels. The router table is a versatile tool, but sometimes the handheld router is the best tool for the job. We'll discuss which router to choose, how to set it up, and how to use or make jigs and guides.

Wooden spoons & spatulas

Start off with a block of hardwood and draw out profiles for a custom-shaped spoon or spatula. Then use the bandsaw, bench sanders, rasps, and chisels to shape it into your own handmade utensil. Fun to make and fun to use!  This class is a staff favorite!

joinery 

Learn several types of joinery including: finger box, sliding dovetails, rabbets, and dados, while making a hardwood box that incorporates these techniques and teaches advanced processes on the table saw and router table. Class runs 4 hours the first week and 2 Hours the second week.
Prerequisite - Safety 1 + EITHER Safety II or Wood I

PICTURE FRAMES

Learn to make a classic, mitre joint picture frame made from reclaimed wood ENTIRELY on the table saw! The class teaches advanced table saw techniques which will also boost students’ confidence with this notorious baddie of a machine. No splines are used but brad nails hold it together. Learn the tips and tricks, and then starting framing! Materials are provided to make one smallish frame.

Coffee tables

Build a solid butcher block style coffee table using reclaimed lumber and stylish hairpin legs. Design it simple yet sleek, mill down the lumber, and laminate it together. This process is applicable to many other furniture projects. Learn to router, sand, finish, and attach the legs.

CUTTING BOARDS

Using various hardwoods you will learn to laminate, plane, router, and sand a cutting board of your design. Choose from different woods and looks. Learn the whys and hows of making a solid board that will last a long time, and most importantly it's made by you!

SPECIALTY CLASSES

CONCRETE + WOOD JAMBOX

Plug your tablet or mobile device into a high quality, bluetooth enabled wood + concrete speaker that you made! Join Yan the mad scientist and DK the designer for this awesome class that is equal parts woodworking, concrete casting, electronics, and soldering. All materials and components are provided.

Skateboards

In this class you'll learn to make a pressed skateboard using the same processes as the pro's!  We provide the mold and 20 tons of pressure, you provide the creativity!  Choose from any of our profile designs to suit any style of skating; park, pipe, street, cruising, or just beginning! Learn to use a router and sander.  Great for kids and adults alike!

MINI CRUISERS

Laminate old flooring to make an old school cruiser. Looks so sleek, rides so fun! We use the same lamination process used to make cutting boards but then get specific about board shape, thickness, wheel placement, and hardware. Some much style in such a little package.

Class Time: 6 hours

CHEF'S KNIFE MAKING

Our most popular class!  Sells out fast sign up for alerts here when new classes are listed! Craft a custom chef's knife in 4 three-hour classes!  Learn to, cut steel, design and shape a knife blank, grind a secondary knife bevel, heat treat 1095 high carbon steel, make a handle from natural materials, and go home with your own chef's knife! You will get dirty, close-toed shoes required!

Wooden Hula Hoops

Make a hula hoop out of wood...say what?! Wooden hula hoops are fun and functional and a great excuse to get back into hoopin'! We use bent lamination to make 5-ply hoops, then router the edges, sand, and paint. Wooden hoops are surprisingly light and strong, and most of all tons of fun to make and paint!


Class Time – 3 hours | Cost – $65

sharpening

Save money and learn to sharpen all those tools that desperately need it! This class covers how to get a fresh edge on knives, scissors, chisels, hand planes, and more. Various methods including sand paper, files, diamond, water, and oil stones, and the tormek will be demonstrated. Bring your own dull tools to practice on!

HOME DIY 

TILING

Learn everything you need to plan and execute any tiling project - from bathrooms to kitchens and beyond! Discover how to plan and prep your project, tools needed and where to find them in the library, and practice cutting cement board, using various tile cutters, saws and nippers to execute a “mini project” in class!

Class time – 3 Hours  |  Cost– $25

 

PLUMBING

There are plenty of plumbing jobs that you can tackle on your own with a little guidance and tools from the library! Learn about home plumbing systems, common tools needed and where to find them in the library, what materials you will encounter and the types of plumbing connections.  Get hands on with cutting different kinds of pipe, using “Shark bites”, making solvent welds, changing faucets, drains, cut off valves, and toilets!

HOME CARE TOOLS & SKILLS

Pro tips to improve and maintain your home! Learn how to use common tools for common home-repair applications like basic wall repair, locating wall studs, caulk applications and techniques, energy efficient measures, and so much more! Includes a Home Care Calendar with month-to-month reminders of simple tasks to maintain your home! A MUST for new homeowners!

FLOOR REFINISHING

Restore the natural beauty of your hardwood floors by learning to use the floor sanders and buffers in the library! Learn all about sandpaper grits, how to use our Silverline floor sander, edger, and flooring nailer, finishing tips and tricks, and even get some hands on practice on our mock-up floors

home Electrical work

Old house “uh-oh’s” and common electrical upgrades that anyone can safely perform! Learn how home electrical systems work, about your breaker box, common problems in old houses and when to call a pro. Get hands on and practice your wiring and safety skills on our mock-up circuit!

Class time – 3 Hours  |  Cost– $25

ASBESTOS, LEAD, AND OLD HOUSES - OH MY!

What you need to know about DIY home repairs, project planning, building codes, and your health and safety. Learn how to identify and deal with asbestos and lead paint, and what to do, how to dispose of construction waste and chemicals, how to build a DIY dust collector and HEPA Vac, common tools needed, material usage, lingo, and how to save money, and when to call a pro!

PICKLES, JAM AND LACTO-FERMENTATION

In this fun 1-day workshop with special guest teacher Josh Rosenstein from Edible Eden Foodscapes, we will discuss local seasonal eating and why preserving the harvest is so important! Then we will explore the artisanal art of lacto-fermentation, vinegar pickling, and jam making.

Participants will get hands-on and go home with 1 half-pint jam, 1 pint jalepenos and 1 quart pickles.
