Want to borrow tools or use the shop?

Membership gives you access to any of the tools in our library! We have hammer drills, miter saws, sanders, bike tools, landscaping equipment, common home improvement tools & more— over 4,000 items in a searchable, live database. No classes are required to borrow tools!

After joining as a member and taking the Shop Safety orientation class, you can work on your projects during Open Shop where you’ll find the right equipment, space, and people to help with your project.

Yes! You can buy a membership gift card for someone else. Find more info here.

Cost

Our suggested minimum membership fee is $1 for every $1,000 in annual income, e.g.
$50,000 annual income = start at $50 annually and go up from there

We encourage people who can afford more to pay more as a way of keeping tools accessible to all. Consider what you might spend on tool rentals or hiring contractors in determining the value of your annual membership.

You can choose to pay for your membership all at once each year, or set up a monthly auto-debit at one of our set levels.

We will never turn away a member for inability to pay.

Benefits

Borrow up to 8 tools at a time for free for a week.

Renew most tools for an extra week if you need more time.

Use our comprehensive wood, craft, and metal shops to work on your own projects (after required safety orientation).

Get advice, tips, and guidance from our staff and 70+ volunteers.

Join a community of lovely, generous, creative people and support a unique institution.

Since becoming a member... I’ve not only gained new skills and confidence as a builder, I’ve joined a fascinating and diverse community of DOers: people fixing things, making things, and turning ideas into reality. It’s been such an empowering way to get to know the city and myself.
